The Lagos State Government has announced a strict enforcement of environmental regulations from July 1, 2025, with penalties reaching ₦250,000 or a three-month jail term for offenders found littering, dumping refuse illegally, or defacing public spaces.
The announcement was made by Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a media briefing, and further shared via the government’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse,” Wahab stated. “From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics begins.”
According to Wahab, over 3,000 environmental offenders have already been arrested, and the state is intensifying both surveillance and public advocacy to drive compliance.
The commissioner also reaffirmed the standing ban on cart pushers, public defecation, and illegal street trading, emphasizing that protecting the environment is now an urgent collective responsibility.
“This is about saving our environment, for us and the generations to come. Let’s celebrate the coming Sallah with cleanliness and responsibility,” he urged.
Wahab further advised residents to bag their waste properly and hand it over to the assigned PSP operators, rather than disposing of it in drains or on road medians.
“We all have a duty to protect our Lagos. The time for change is now,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources is expected to roll out more public awareness campaigns ahead of the enforcement date, as the state prepares for a more sustainable and cleaner future.
