Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has instructed the commencement of operations for 'Ounje Eko' food markets in Lagos starting Sunday, March 17, 2024. These markets are mandated to offer discounted food items in all five divisions of the state. Residents can expect staple foods such as rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper, among others, to be sold at a 25% discount.
The directive, aimed at ensuring fair distribution and preventing exploitation, will implement a voucher system during the initial phase. Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been meticulously selected to manage the process and provide real-time data for effective monitoring.
The statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, outlined the government's commitment to reaching a larger number of Lagosians with affordable food. The voucher system and careful selection of vendors aim to prevent irregularities and ensure transparency in the process.
