The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) impounded 9,370 vehicles for alleged traffic violations between January and June. General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki confirmed this figure on Sunday, July 7, during a meeting with transportation industry stakeholders. He reported that 3,034 private vehicles, including 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 SUVs, were among those impounded. Additionally, 256 casualties were recorded during this period.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists to obey traffic rules and respect traffic managers. He highlighted the agency's efforts in overcoming challenges by training and retraining personnel, with 2,000 staff members receiving internal and external training. Collaborations with the Nigerian Police, Lagos Command, and various consultants have focused on leadership skills, emotional intelligence, customer care, and incident management.

To improve service delivery, LASTMA plans to launch a toll-free call center accommodating English, Yoruba, and Pidgin. The authority has also intensified enforcement efforts, clearing the Apapa Port area and other congested routes like Idumota, Apogbon, CMS, and the Lekki-Ajah axis, resulting in significant improvements in orderliness.
Bakare-Oki emphasized LASTMA's commitment to enhancing traffic management and reducing travel time for Lagos residents, especially during peak periods. The agency is deploying over 2,000 traffic equipment and continues to work across the five divisions in Lagos to maintain and improve traffic flow.
