A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, was reportedly attacked alongside his friends by armed robbers on the night of May 29, 2026, while off campus.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Thursday, the university described the development as a painful loss to the institution.
According to the statement signed by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the university immediately took steps to support the student after learning of the attack.
The Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, was said to have maintained contact with medical personnel handling Otabor’s treatment, while also keeping the university management informed about his condition.
Despite efforts to save his life, Otabor died on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, from injuries sustained during the attack.

Following his death, officials of the university visited his family and also met with representatives of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and law enforcement agencies.
LASU stated that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and the arrest of those responsible.
“The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement said.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the university community, expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased student.
The institution also prayed for the peaceful repose of Otabor’s soul and called for justice to be served in the case.
