The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, announced yesterday that 153 students will be graduating with First Class honors during the institution’s 27th convocation ceremony. The event is scheduled to take place from May 30 to June 6.
During a press conference, Prof. Olatunji-Bello shared that out of the 8,670 students graduating with first degrees, 3,029 will receive second class (upper division) degrees, 715 will receive second class (lower division) degrees, 228 will graduate with pass degrees, and 195 will receive non-classified degrees.
Furthermore, among the 2,164 post-graduate students, 375 will be awarded post-graduate diplomas, 962 will receive academic master's degrees, 672 will obtain professional master's degrees, 89 will be conferred with Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and 66 will earn professional doctoral degrees.
The best graduating student for the 2022/2023 academic session is Olaniyi Olawale (Accounting Education) with a CGPA of 4.79. Olaitan Damilola (Educational Management), with a CGPA of 4.98, is the best graduating student for the master's program.
Additionally, of the 554 diploma students graduating, 55 will receive distinctions, 274 will earn upper credits, 224 will receive lower credits, and one student will pass.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello emphasized that the conducive academic environment at LASU has significantly contributed to the personal growth and achievements of both staff and students. She highlighted that 10 alumni from the Faculty of Law graduated with first-class honors in their final bar examination at the Nigerian Law School earlier this year, marking the highest number ever attained by the university in a single session.
The convocation lecture, scheduled for June 4, will be delivered by former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola. The lecture's theme is ‘Embracing the Future: Navigating the Intersection of Technology and Humanity’. Fashola, who was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Urban and Rural Community Development and Youth Empowerment) during the last convocation, will be joined by Emeritus Prof. Peter Okebukola, who will chair the event. Okebukola is a distinguished Professor of Science and Computer Education and the first in LASU's history to be conferred with the rank of Emeritus Professor.
Apart from the 89 doctorate awardees, honorary doctorate degrees will also be awarded to four eminent Nigerians for their invaluable contributions to Nigeria's development. The honorees are Prof. Martins Anetekhai, Prof. Amidu Sanni, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, and Prince Samuel Adedoyin.
