Maiduguri

The devastating flood in Maiduguri, Borno State, has left at least 414,000 people displaced and claimed the lives of 30 residents, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Heavy rains caused the Alau Dam to overflow, leading to what residents and the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council are calling the worst flooding in the area in 30 years.

NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, confirmed the figures, adding that over 23,000 households have been affected, with large portions of Maiduguri submerged under water. Key locations, including the Shehu of Borno's palace, the state secretariat, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, were severely impacted. The floodwaters also destroyed 80% of the animals at Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo and washed away homes, schools, and worship centers.
