Masked individuals suspected to be Yoruba Nation Agitators recently made an incursion into the Oyo Government Secretariat, positioning themselves at key locations within the premises. Some were reportedly stationed at the entrance to the Governor’s office gate, while others were observed at the House of Assembly Gate and the main entrance. The presence of these armed men caused alarm in the area, leading to heightened security measures by on-duty personnel.
Security operatives, including the Police Command and other anti-crime agencies, swiftly responded to the situation, deploying numerous patrol vans to the Secretariat's entrance. The Oyo security network, Amotekun, also arrived to support the security efforts. Tensions escalated as the security forces engaged in a confrontation with the agitators, resulting in the use of tear gas to disperse the crowd and restore order.
The arrival of military officers from the 2nd Division of the Army eventually quelled the situation, with some of the agitators fleeing upon their arrival. Efforts by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (retired), to calm the situation were unsuccessful, as the masked gunmen remained determined to hoist their flag within the Secretariat premises. The incident caused disruption to normal activities in the area, prompting shop owners, businesses, and residents in Bodija, Ikolaba, and along the route to Awolowo to close their doors and seek safety.
As of the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether any arrests were made during the incident, as security operatives continue their efforts to restore calm and normalcy to the area.
