Minors Detained During #EndBadGovernance Protests Share “Hellish” Custody Experiences After Release Ordered by President Tinubu

Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the release of minors detained during August's #EndBadGovernance protests, the youth are now sharing accounts of difficult conditions endured in custody. The protests were initially sparked by growing economic hardship, leading to widespread arrests. Among the 76 individuals detained, 32 were minors, aged between 14 and 17, who faced charges of treason and incitement.

The detainees, some visibly malnourished, collapsed during their court appearance last Friday, leading to an outcry from civil society and rights groups. The President subsequently ordered their release and a full investigation into potential misconduct by law enforcement.

Upon their return, several minors recounted their experiences, with 15-year-old Umar Ali describing severe food shortages and prolonged isolation. “We sometimes stayed for three days without food, and the little we were given was inadequate,” Ali told *The PUNCH*. Others, like Ibrahim Aliyu Musa, reported being held alongside hardened criminals, further intensifying their ordeal.

Following their release, minors from Kano were provided with medical care at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital. Kaduna Governor Uba Sani has pledged support for the youth, offering counseling, rehabilitation, and financial aid. In addition, he announced that skilled and educated detainees could receive startup capital or job placements if they demonstrate good behavior.

Despite the release order, three minors remain detained in Borno State, reportedly involved in a social media group accused of mobilizing arms for protests. Civil rights advocates in Borno are monitoring the case, awaiting their release.

The Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi II, praised Tinubu’s decision, underscoring the importance of compassion in governance and commending support efforts by the Kano State Government.
