The proprietors of Digital Satellite Television (DStv), Multichoice, have announced that its sports channel, SuperSport, will not air the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, competition this year.
The company provided the announcement in a statement, citing the fact that “the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament…”
But it said Africa’s premium football showcase will be available through its partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.
The statement added: “Multichoice Africa remains committed to ensuring football fans across Africa continue to enjoy unrivalled access to entertainment and football games available on DStv and GOtv platforms including, the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League and many more of football’s most prestigious competitions.”
In November, CAF announced that it had sold the broadcast rights to all its football content to Togo-based New World TV in a three-year deal.
Therefore, New World TV won the rights to broadcast 2023 AFCON across sub-Saharan Africa, instead of SuperSport, while beIN Sports won the rights to do so in the MENA (Middle-East and North Africa) region.
CAF’s deal with New World TV also led to millions of football fans across sub-Sahara Africa being unable to watch their national teams in the opening rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November.
