Jeremiah Umaru, the House of Representatives member representing Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon, and Wamba federal constituency in Nasarawa State, has raised concerns over the growing insecurity in the region. Speaking during a peace and security summit he organized in Akwanga Local Government on Thursday, the lawmaker called for urgent intervention from stakeholders and residents to address the situation.
The summit, according to Umaru, was aimed at complementing efforts by the Federal, State, and Local Governments to ensure peaceful coexistence among the diverse population in his constituency. Umaru, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized that security is a collective responsibility, not just that of the government and security agencies.
“Security is not just the responsibility of the government and the security agencies alone, but a collective responsibility,” Umaru stated. He explained that the event provided a platform for individuals from various cultural, religious, and political backgrounds to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue as a step toward fostering unity and peace.
Umaru also pledged to continue pushing for initiatives, bills, and motions in the National Assembly that will address the challenges facing his constituents.
In light of recent flooding incidents in Nasarawa State, the lawmaker urged residents to report early signs of potential disasters to the relevant authorities for quick intervention.
The summit featured various speakers, including Bashir Idris-Garna, the North-Central Director of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). He encouraged residents to adopt non-violent conflict resolution methods, emphasizing the importance of communication in promoting peace and reducing tensions.
Traditional leaders, such as the Chun Mada, Samson Gamu-Yare, expressed gratitude for the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace efforts in the area.
The summit brought together a diverse group of attendees, including district and village heads, student groups, traders, and local community leaders.
