An analysis of the 2024 budgets of the National Assembly, the 36 state assemblies, and their agencies indicates a total expenditure of N724bn, with N673.94bn earmarked for operational expenses. This includes N50bn allocated for the salaries and allowances of federal and state lawmakers.

According to data from the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Allocation Commission, the basic salary of a Senator is N2.03m annually, with additional allowances bringing their total yearly earnings to N8.12m. The Senate President and Deputy Senate President will receive N33.29m and N30.94m respectively, including allowances for constituency representation and recess.

In the House of Representatives, members will earn N1.99m annually in basic salary, totaling N7.94m over four years, with additional allowances amounting to N58.76m per member. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker will receive N18.33m and N17.16m respectively, including similar allowances.

State assemblies are also included in the budget, with each member earning N1.34m annually and N5.34m over four years in basic salary, along with N12.97m in allowances. However, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of these budgets, as evidenced by the Ondo State House of Assembly's statement that its N14.9bn budget may not be sufficient to cover all expenses for the year, calling for the implementation of assembly autonomy.
