The national electricity grid suffered another system collapse on Wednesday, leaving many parts of the country without power.
Reports indicate that the grid lost power shortly after 11:00 a.m., with hourly power generation dropping from 4,064 megawatts at 11:00 a.m. to 1,203MW at 12:00 p.m., before plummeting to 0.00MW by 1:00 p.m.
TCN Yet to Respond
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the collapse. When contacted, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said she was at an event and had yet to respond to inquiries.
However, sources within power generation companies confirmed a general grid disturbance, with most power plants losing generation capacity at the time of the incident.
Recurring Grid Failures
This marks the first grid collapse of 2025 after a reported line tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, and in the last 10 years, over 100 collapses have been recorded.
Abuja Electricity Confirms Collapse
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the development in a post on its X (formerly Twitter) handle:
“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised.”
While efforts are ongoing to restore electricity, the latest collapse further underscores Nigeria’s persistent power sector challenges, with stakeholders calling for urgent reforms to stabilize the grid and ensure reliable electricity supply.
