Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed on Monday after several major power plants lost generation, throwing many parts of the country into darkness.

Checks showed that the grid went down at about 3pm. Earlier in the day, electricity generation had reached a peak of roughly 4,800 megawatts, but by 3pm it had plunged sharply to about 139 megawatts, according to available power sector data.

The exact cause of the collapse was not immediately clear. However, the incident happened while the Nigerian Independent System Operator was working to increase power supply following recent gas shortages linked to pipeline vandalism.

As of the time this report was filed, all 22 power plants connected to the national grid had gone off generation.

More details are expected as investigations continue.
