The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau, has condemned the actions of both counsel and courts involved in recent proceedings at the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court. Maikyau stated that these actions have brought significant disgrace to the legal profession.
In a statement released on Wednesday, May 29, and signed by NBA National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, it was noted that public mockery of the Nigerian legal profession is a direct result of the courts' conduct. Maikyau emphasized the long-term damage inflicted on the profession, calling the situation unfortunate and unnecessary.
Maikyau highlighted the urgent need to scrutinize the professional conduct of both the counsel and judges involved in these matters. He urged the heads of the concerned courts to investigate potential abuses of judicial office and report to the National Judicial Council. Regarding the lawyers involved, Maikyau assured that the NBA would investigate and potentially commence disciplinary action against those found guilty of professional misconduct.
Tensions and uncertainty have escalated in the state following a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday when the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court issued opposing interim injunctions over the Kano Emirate. The NBA president's call for accountability aims to restore integrity within the legal profession.
