NDLEA Busts Cannabis Cake Syndicate: 28-Year-Old Woman Arrested in Bayelsa

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a 28-year-old woman, Jennifer Iliya, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, for producing and distributing cakes laced with illicit drugs, particularly cannabis sativa. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, revealed this in a statement on Sunday. He stated that a substantial number of drugged cakes weighing 1.5kg were seized from her during the arrest.

In a similar development, a 20-year-old hair stylist, Josephine Odunu, and a 30-year-old dispatch rider, Edesemi Ikporo, were also arrested in Yenagoa on Sunday, March 10, for engaging in the same criminal activity. Meanwhile, at the Lagos airport, a suspect who allegedly concealed drugs in women's wear was apprehended.

The statement further disclosed that NDLEA officers at the Gate C departure hall of the Lagos airport on Friday, April 26, arrested a passenger, Yahaya Danjuma Oturah, attempting to export 4,000 pills of tramadol 225mg to Malpensa, Italy, on an Ethiopian Airline flight. The psychoactive substance was found concealed in women's wear and granulated melon packed in the suspect’s backpack and another bag containing food items. Oturah, a frequent flyer, confessed to being hired as a courier for €700 upon successful delivery of the consignment in Italy.

In a series of operations, the NDLEA also arrested two suspects, Joseph Dadik, 47, and Bensha Yari, 32, with 24,180 ampoules of pentazocine injection weighing 135.5 kilograms at Sabon Tasha, Kaduna. Additionally, Adamu Umar, 18, was apprehended with 20.700kg of cannabis in Shuware area of Mubi, Adamawa state. Other arrests included Stanley Chukwudi, 43, with 5,900 ampoules of pentazocine injection in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State, and a couple, Fredrick Odion, 53, and Gladys Odion, 52, with 50kg of cannabis in Esan West LGA of Edo State.

Earlier in April, NDLEA operatives, in conjunction with the Department of State Security, detained a 35-year-old lady, Chidinma Chinenye-Agbazue, after she was caught attempting to export 20 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 10.70 kilograms concealed in African salad and dried vegetables to Doha, Qatar, through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.
