The Nasarawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announced the seizure of 7,149 kilograms of drugs between July 2023 and June 2024. This was disclosed by the State Commander, Peter Onche-Odaudu, during a news briefing in Lafia, part of the week-long activities commemorating the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to Onche-Odaudu, the seizures included 7,037.2 kg of cannabis sativa, 0.011 kg of cocaine, 0.185 kg of methamphetamine, and 111.534 kg of various psychotropic substances. He emphasized that these results were achieved despite significant challenges, including logistical constraints and limited funding.

"The arduous task of checking the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, in spite of the daunting challenges of logistics and paucity of funds, had resulted in the modest achievements," Onche-Odaudu remarked.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26, as designated by the United Nations. This year’s theme, "The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention," underscores the critical importance of preventive measures over remedial actions in tackling drug abuse.

As part of the commemorative activities, the NDLEA Nasarawa Command has organized an advocacy walk from Lafia to Lafia Stadium, with the grand finale event scheduled for June 22 at the Conference Room of the Federal Secretariat in Lafia. Additionally, anti-drug sensitization campaigns will be conducted at GSM Village, Lafia, and Lafia Custodial Centre on the following Monday and Tuesday.

Commander Onche-Odaudu extended his gratitude to Governor Abdullahi Sule for his support in the state's drug war. He also acknowledged the contributions of journalists, sister security agencies, and various stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse in Nasarawa State.
