Yusuf Ata, the newly appointed Minister of Housing and Urban Development, has committed to using his role to help the All Progressives Congress (APC) reclaim control of Kano State. Shortly after his swearing-in, Ata addressed journalists in Kano, outlining his vision to leverage his ministerial position to support the APC's revival in the state.
Ata, a prominent politician from Kano Central, highlighted the strategic importance of his appointment, pointing out that it is intended not only for developmental purposes but also to reinforce the APC’s influence in Kano. The APC previously held power in the state but lost it to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, a significant shift after years of APC leadership under former Governor and current APC national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje.
“A central part of our strategy lies in Kano Central, where I am from,” Ata said, underscoring the region’s political weight in Kano’s electoral landscape. He expressed confidence that the APC can regain the people’s trust, stating, “This position is not just about housing and urban development—it’s about creating a pathway for the APC to reconnect with the people of Kano.”
Ata also indicated that he intends to address key challenges in Kano Central as part of his development agenda, emphasizing that tangible progress in the area would be instrumental in winning back support for the APC. “We recognize the importance of Kano Central, not just for the APC but for the entire state. My mission is to ensure development that resonates with the people and, ultimately, brings them back to the APC,” he added.
Ata’s appointment marks a strategic move by the APC, signaling its determination to rebuild and strengthen its political base in Kano ahead of future elections.
