The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, aiming to revive the team’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign. Nigeria currently sits fifth in Group C with three points from four games, trailing group leader Rwanda by four points.
Following an emergency meeting in Abuja, the NFF Executive Committee resolved to bring in a more capable coach to replace the current head coach, Finidi George, to ensure Nigeria does not miss out on two consecutive World Cup editions, having failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In a communique released to NationSport, the NFF apologized to Nigerians for the Super Eagles' poor start to the World Cup qualifiers and assured that necessary measures are being taken to improve the team's performance when qualifiers resume in March next year. The NFF’s plan to hire a foreign technical adviser suggests a likely end to Finidi George's tenure.

"The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologized to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent very poor returns of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals," the communique read. "We pledge to work assiduously and put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September this year and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025."
The committee also resolved to strengthen the NFF Technical Department and reconfigure the Technical and Development Sub-Committee. The Super Eagles are set to face Rwanda's Wasps on March 19th in Kigali, followed by a home match against Zimbabwe's Warriors shortly thereafter.
