Nigeria Labour Congress Unaware of Merger Talks Involving Labour Party

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has stated that the congress was not aware of any merger talks involving the Labour Party (LP) with other political parties in Nigeria. The LP, a socio-democratic political party, was founded by the organised labour.

Speculations arose about a possible merger between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after a meeting between the 2023 presidential candidate of the LP, Peter Obi, and the PDP's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar. Obi also reportedly met with PDP stalwarts in Abuja, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former governor of Jigawa State Sule Lamido.

Atiku, speaking after his meeting with Obi on May 13, 2024, mentioned that party members would decide their fate in the 2027 general elections. He expressed willingness to support Obi if the PDP selected him as its presidential candidate for the South-East in 2027. This has led to speculation about a possible alliance between the two parties leading up to the 2027 elections.

However, Ajaero clarified that the NLC was not involved in any merger talks involving the LP. He emphasized, "We are not aware of such talks," when asked about the NLC's stance on potential merger discussions that could lead to the LP's dissolution.
