Nigeria has been ranked as the third most powerful military force in Africa, according to the 2025 Global Military Strength Index released by Global Firepower (GFP), an internationally respected military analytics platform.
The annual index evaluates the military strength of 145 countries based on over 60 criteria, including manpower, equipment capabilities, defense budgets, logistical readiness, and geographical advantage. In Africa, Egypt retained its top spot, followed by Algeria in second place, with Nigeria solidifying its position in third.
South Africa and Ethiopia round out the continent's top five, highlighting the distribution of military capabilities across northern, western, and southern regions of the continent.
