As part of the 60th-anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the 22nd Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), unveiled 15 significant infrastructural projects in Abuja on May 20, 2024. Among the projects commissioned at NAF Base, Asokoro, are a 40-bed NAF Hospital, a sports complex, the NAF Microfinance Bank, a fire bay, and a 56-shop market plaza. Additionally, the NAF Airmen Mini Base in Karu, the NAF Officers Quarters in Garki and Karimu, a new six-floor HQ NAF Annex Building at Gudu, and a state-of-the-art Airport Commandant’s office at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport were also inaugurated.
In his remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar addressed the NAF's struggle with housing shortages due to its expanded force structure. He highlighted that these initiatives are part of his command philosophy to maintain a highly motivated force by enhancing welfare and renewing infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of properly claiming and securing all NAF-owned properties, noting that reclaiming encroached lands will create space for future operational facilities and accommodations for the growing workforce.
As the NAF marks its 60th anniversary, the CAS noted that these projects align with his transformative agenda to reposition the force for continued growth and development. He stated that these advancements not only bolster the NAF's operational capabilities but also significantly enhance the welfare of its personnel, ensuring the force is well-prepared to confront future challenges. The CAS urged NAF personnel to utilize the new facilities to the fullest.
Air Marshal Abubakar expressed gratitude to President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Bola Ahmad Tinubu, for his unwavering support. He emphasized that the newly unveiled projects serve as a fitting tribute to NAF’s six decades of service and sacrifice, marking a significant milestone in the force’s history.
