The Nigerian Army has detained a soldier responsible for the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Ismail Mohammed in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the soldier fired a warning shot while attempting to disperse hoodlums, inadvertently hitting the teenager.
Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, stated that the troops had responded to a distress call about hoodlums gathering in Samaru, burning tires, and pelting stones at security personnel. Upon arrival, the soldiers were attacked by the mob, leading one soldier to fire a warning shot, resulting in Mohammed's tragic death. The soldier involved has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He dispatched a delegation led by Maj.-Gen. Lander Saraso, General Officer Commanding 1 Division, to visit and offer their condolences.
The deceased was buried according to Islamic rites, with senior military officers in attendance, underscoring the gravity of the incident and the army's commitment to addressing it.
