Nigerian Military Warns Against Nationwide Protest: “Preventing a Repeat of Kenya’s Chaos”

Protest

The Defence Headquarters has issued a stern warning against the proposed nationwide protest slated to begin on August 1, 2024. This protest, organized by groups under the #EndbadgovernanceinNigeria banner, aims to highlight economic hardships but is feared to potentially spiral into violence, similar to recent events in Kenya.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen Edward Buba, addressing journalists in Abuja, emphasized that intelligence suggests unscrupulous elements may hijack the protest, leading to violent outcomes. Citing the unrest in Kenya, where peaceful rallies against tax hikes turned deadly, Buba warned that Nigeria could face similar chaos if the protests proceed unchecked.

The Federal Government and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, have also voiced strong opposition, referencing the lingering wounds from the #EndSARS protest. Buba detailed potential targets for violence, including individuals with smartphones, car owners, business establishments, and places of worship, indicating a scenario of widespread anarchy and lawlessness.

Reiterating the military's constitutional duty to maintain order, Buba assured that the armed forces would act decisively to prevent the country from descending into chaos. He stressed the importance of timing and the current economic atmosphere, urging citizens to reconsider participating in the protest to avoid exacerbating the nation's challenges.
