NJC Summons Chief Judges Over Kano Emirate Tussle

Judge

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has summoned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the Chief Judge of Kano State High Court over conflicting interim injunctions issued concerning the Kano Emirate tussle. The summon, issued by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) on Wednesday, May 29, aims to address the confusion caused by conflicting orders issued by judges of both courts.

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S. A. Amobeda, issued an order for the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace, supporting the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. However, a Kano State High Court, presided over by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, issued an injunction protecting Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and other key figures from potential harassment by state authorities, safeguarding the Emir's autonomy and the symbols of his authority.

The conflicting orders have led to confusion regarding the rightful authority and protection of the emirs in Kano. The State High Court's case is scheduled for further hearing on June 13, while the Federal High Court adjourned the case before it till June 4. The NJC's intervention is aimed at resolving this legal impasse and ensuring clarity in the matter.
