The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised serious concerns over the alleged invasion and ransacking of its Edo State Council Secretariat, calling for urgent action by the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
In letters addressed separately to the governor and the IGP, NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja highlighted resolutions from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on December 18, 2024, in Owerri, Imo State. Among the key resolutions was a demand for the police to vacate the premises and return confiscated property by January 8, 2025, to avoid a confrontation with organized labour.
Petition to Governor Okpebholo
The NLC expressed disappointment with the alleged actions, stating:
“The reported invasion undermines the principles of democracy and the protection of trade union rights. Edo State, known for its legacy of supporting workers’ rights, cannot afford to tarnish this reputation.”
The petition called on the governor to:
- Vacate the NLC Secretariat premises,
- Restore all confiscated property, and
- Refrain from interfering in the Congress's affairs.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with your administration to address mutual concerns and uphold the rights and welfare of workers,” the NLC added.
In its letter to IGP Egbetokun, the NLC highlighted the implications of police involvement in the alleged invasion:
“This act raises serious questions about the protection of trade union rights enshrined in the Constitution. We request immediate attention to ensure the safety of our members and restitution of confiscated properties.”
The NLC reiterated its dedication to constructive engagement with the police to uphold the rule of law and protect workers’ rights.
The NLC has urged both the Edo State Government and the police to resolve the matter swiftly to avoid further escalation. The Congress emphasized its readiness to collaborate with relevant authorities while safeguarding the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers.
This development underscores the NLC's commitment to defending trade union rights and ensuring accountability from all stakeholders involved.
