The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State has accused the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, of appointing five first-class emirs, including Aminu Bayero, for political gains. According to NNPP chairman Hashimu Dungurawa, these appointments were aimed at influencing the 2023 general elections in favor of Ganduje's party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dungurawa claimed that the appointments were part of a political strategy that expired with Ganduje’s tenure. He suggested that the emirs, who enjoyed the status equivalent to state commissioners under Ganduje, lost their positions after the APC's defeat in the 2023 elections. He argued that their roles were tied to Ganduje’s political agenda rather than traditional or cultural considerations.

In response to public dissatisfaction and a perceived vacancy in the Kano Emirate, Governor Abba Yusuf reinstated Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano. The Kano State Assembly repealed the 2019 Kano Emirate Council law and enacted new legislation to consolidate the Kano Emirate, which the governor approved.
Dungurawa also criticized Bayero for hoisting the emirate flag at the Nasarawa palace, claiming it was inappropriate and that Bayero was essentially acting as a personal assistant to Emir Sanusi II. He praised Justice A. Liman for handling the legal disputes regarding the emir appointments professionally.
This development underscores ongoing political and traditional tensions in Kano State, reflecting the complex interplay between politics and cultural institutions in the region.
