The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two individuals for oil theft, sabotage, and illegal dealings in petroleum products in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Babawale Afolabi, the suspects, Jeremiah Ufok (28) and Saviour Patrick (22), were caught siphoning crude oil from pipelines and refining it into Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) using makeshift equipment.

The suspects were apprehended during a routine patrol by the Commandant General’s (CG’s) Special Intelligence Squad following a tip-off.

Speaking on the arrest, Squad Commandant Appolos Dandaura expressed disappointment that illegal activities persisted despite previous arrests in the area.

“In spite of the initial arrest of four persons in the area, some individuals remain adamant, refusing to stop sabotaging the nation’s economy,” he said.

Dandaura reaffirmed the squad's commitment to combat oil theft and pipeline vandalism, ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.

“We appreciate the public for their confidence in the NSCDC and for providing credible intelligence leading to these arrests. The Commandant General has ordered a thorough investigation to track down sponsors and accomplices who are currently at large,” he added.

Recovered from the crime scene at Open River Camp in Ukwa were several kegs filled with AGO and DPK.

Dandaura assured that after the investigation, the suspects would be prosecuted in court.
