Obinna Nsofor Urges Osimhen to Leave Galatasaray for Champions League Ambition

Former Super Eagles striker Obinna Nsofor has advised Victor Osimhen to leave Galatasaray this summer, insisting that the Nigerian forward must join a club capable of winning the UEFA Champions League if he wants to be regarded as one of the best strikers in the world.

Nsofor, who was part of Nigeria’s silver medal-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, praised Osimhen’s impact in Turkey but said the striker has outgrown the level he currently plays at.

“Victor Osimhen has done enough at Galatasaray. If he truly wants to become the best striker in the world, then he must move to a club that can compete seriously for the UEFA Champions League,” Nsofor said during an interview with Brila FM.

He acknowledged Galatasaray’s stature in Turkish football but maintained that the club is not among Europe’s top contenders for the Champions League title.

“Galatasaray is a big club, but when you talk about teams expected to win the Champions League, they are not among the favourites. Osimhen should be competing with the very best strikers every season,” he added.

Osimhen has enjoyed a brilliant spell with the Turkish giants, scoring 59 goals in 74 appearances over two seasons while helping the club win three trophies, including another league title secured after a 4-2 victory over Antalyaspor last weekend.

The 27-year-old has also been in impressive form this season, recording 15 goals and five assists in 22 league appearances.

Osimhen first gained global attention after leading Nigeria to victory at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup, where he finished as top scorer with 10 goals — a record that still stands.

After successful spells with Lille OSC and SSC Napoli, he helped Napoli win their first Serie A title in 33 years during the 2022/23 season and ended the campaign as the league’s top scorer.

Several top European clubs, including Arsenal F.C., Manchester United F.C., Real Madrid C.F. and FC Barcelona, have reportedly shown interest in signing the Nigerian striker ahead of the summer transfer window.

Osimhen previously turned down a move to Saudi Arabia and also saw a proposed transfer to Chelsea F.C. collapse in 2024 before eventually joining Galatasaray.

With the striker now entering the peak years of his career, many believe a return to one of Europe’s top leagues is only a matter of time.
