Residents of Ogbagi Akoko in Ondo State on Monday took to the streets to protest the worsening condition of the Ikare-Ogbagi-Irun Akoko federal road, which connects their community to Ado-Ekiti. The demonstrators, comprising farmers, traders, and motorists, decried the road's deterioration, blaming it for recurrent accidents, economic hardship, and loss of lives.
Protesters, led by community representative Oluwatuyi Aderemi, described the road as a “nightmare” for commuters, especially farmers who struggle to transport their produce. Aderemi warned that erosion was compounding the problem and urged both state and federal governments to urgently intervene to prevent further damage and economic losses.
Responding, the Federal Controller of Works in Ondo State, Wasiu Owolabi, revealed that eight out of the 40-kilometre road stretch has been completed, and appealed for residents’ patience as work continues.
Also addressing the issue, Senator Jide Ipinsagba, representing Ondo North Senatorial District, acknowledged the road's poor state and pledged to lobby relevant federal agencies for accelerated repairs and intervention.
