Ogun State Governor Calls for Court of Appeal in the State

Ogun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has requested the establishment of a Court of Appeal in Ogun State to facilitate the speedy dispensation of justice. He made this appeal during a meeting with the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, at his office in Abeokuta.

Governor Abiodun highlighted the need for an Appeal Court division in Ogun State to reduce the workload of judges in the Ibadan Division. He referenced a previous request made in 2020 to the then President for the establishment of the Ogun State Division of the Court of Appeal, noting that most cases in the Ibadan Division were from Ogun State.

The governor also mentioned his administration's efforts in reforming the justice system, including the implementation of the Multi-Court House Scheme and the appointment of 22 judges.

Justice Dongban-Mensem explained that her visit to the Ibadan Division was aimed at addressing the backlog of appeal cases, which had been delayed due to various factors such as elections and commercial appeals. She expressed concern over the workload of the Ibadan Division, especially with the reduction of judges due to posting, promotion, retirement, or death.

The President of the Court of Appeal assured that steps would be taken to address the imbalance and praised the Abiodun-led administration for its efforts in transforming the state and involving the state judiciary in its initiatives.
