Former Special Adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Babafemi Ojudu, has shared insights into how he and other allies dissuaded President Bola Tinubu from accepting an offer to serve as Minister of Finance under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Speaking on the State Affairs podcast hosted by Edmund Obilo, Ojudu revealed that Tinubu had been invited to join Yar’Adua's government of unity but was advised against it due to potential political risks.
Recalling the pivotal moment, Ojudu said Tinubu had expressed excitement about the offer, but he immediately cautioned him. Drawing parallels to the assassination of Bola Ige, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Ojudu warned Tinubu that accepting the role could jeopardize his political career and safety. “You are digging your political grave if you accept that type of job,” Ojudu recounted, emphasizing the importance of Tinubu’s survival as the leader of the Action Congress.
Rauf Aregbesola, another close ally and former Osun State Governor, echoed Ojudu’s sentiments during the discussion. While a businessman argued the role could bring benefits, Ojudu and Aregbesola prioritized Tinubu’s long-term political aspirations. “Our dream for him is bigger than him becoming a minister in Yar’Adua’s government,” Ojudu stressed, predicting adverse consequences had Tinubu accepted the position.
Addressing allegations of betrayal during the 2023 presidential race, Ojudu clarified his support for Yemi Osinbajo over Tinubu for the APC ticket, citing differing visions rather than personal animosity. “It’s not personal,” he said, adding that his loyalty to national progress outweighed personal friendships. The remarks underline Tinubu's journey and the role of strategic decisions in shaping his political trajectory.
