Okuama Crisis: Violence Erupts in Delta State as Scavengers Clash With Returnees

Okuama

Violence has erupted in the Okuama-Ewu Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where suspected scavengers clashed with returnees, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to three others. The clash occurred barely 24 hours after the Nigerian Army withdrew from the community.

The withdrawal of soldiers began on Monday and was completed on Wednesday following negotiations between Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Army authorities. Seizing the opportunity, some youths from neighboring villages ventured into the community to scavenge for items to sell.

Meanwhile, in a related incident, residents of Akugbene community in Bomadi Local Government Area reported that four of their indigenes were attacked and macheted by returnees from Okuama. The victims were on their way to Ezebiri Community when they were ambushed, allegedly by Okuama returnees. One of the victims managed to escape and is receiving treatment, but one person, Egberike Masah, is still missing.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria has petitioned the Senate and House Committees on Human Rights over the incident at the EFCC headquarters, where protesters were allegedly attacked. The CSOs are demanding an investigation and appropriate action against those responsible.

The situation in Okuama-Ewu remains tense, with villagers wary of returning due to the potential threat of violence. Community leaders have called for calm and are seeking government intervention to restore peace and security in the area.
