Opposition Parties Challenge Edo Governorship Election Victory at Tribunal

Edo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and four other political parties have filed petitions at the election petitions tribunal in Edo State to contest the September 21 victory of Governor-elect Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP, alongside the All Peoples Movement (APM), All Peoples Party (APP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), are challenging the election outcome.

At a press conference in Benin, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, revealed that the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has filed a petition, asserting that the APC’s win was illegitimate. Aziegbemi accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of compromising the election process and expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim its "stolen mandate."

Meanwhile, the Edo State chapter of the APC has announced the formation of a 24-member transition team to collaborate with the outgoing government led by Governor Godwin Obaseki. According to Edo APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, the committee, headed by Dr. Pius Odubu, is set to work with Obaseki’s team to ensure a seamless transition process.

The APC’s transition team includes prominent members such as Senator Matthew Urhoghide, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, and Omosede Igbinedion, among others, who are expected to lead the discussions for a smooth handover of power.
