An Israeli air strike in Gaza’s northern Beit Lahia district overnight has reportedly killed over 55 people, with dozens still trapped under debris. The five-storey residential building targeted belonged to the Abu Nasr family, according to Gaza’s civil defence agency. Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the agency, said the injured included many children and that rescue operations are ongoing despite severe shortages of medical supplies and personnel.
Kamal Adwan Hospital, where 15 of the deceased were brought, is overwhelmed, with staff struggling to treat 35 wounded individuals. Director Hussam Abu Safia noted that the hospital is operating with only basic first aid materials after Israeli forces reportedly detained staff and invaded the facility in nearby Jabalia. Efforts to treat incoming patients are hampered as essential resources run critically low.
The Israeli military has stated it is investigating the reported strike and continues to conduct ground and air operations throughout northern Gaza, including Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, aiming to dismantle militant strongholds. In a Tuesday statement, the military reported killing around 40 suspected militants in Jabalia over the past day.
The conflict has displaced tens of thousands of Gaza residents, with reports of hundreds of civilian deaths as the onslaught intensifies. Gaza’s civil defence agency warns that casualties continue to mount amid limited access to essential services and ongoing hostilities in the region.
