The Owa Obokun of Ijesa land, Oba Adekunle Gabriel Aromolaran, has passed away at the age of 87, bringing an end to his 42-year reign. The revered monarch passed away on Wednesday evening at the Obafemi Awolowo University Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, after battling an undisclosed illness.

Tension filled Ilesa on Thursday morning as security operatives, including the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police, took control of the palace, following reports that the palace gates had been shut. The monarch’s personal belongings were reportedly being moved, signaling the tragic event.

The Asiwaju of Ijesaland, Chief Olayinka Fasuyi, confirmed the monarch's passing and expressed deep sorrow at the end of an era in the community. In a statement, Fasuyi noted, “An era comes to an abrupt end! A monumental history closes. The torch bearer of Oduduwa relocates.”

Oba Aromolaran’s reign, which spanned over four decades, left an indelible mark on Ijesaland. His leadership, wisdom, and legacy will be cherished by the Ijesa people both at home and abroad. As the community mourns the loss of their paramount ruler, the impact of his long and illustrious reign will forever remain a source of pride and admiration.

Ijesaland now bids farewell to its beloved monarch, Oba (Dr.) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II, CFR, LL.D, as the people unite to celebrate his life and contributions.
