Residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital, complied with the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Thursday, leading to a complete shutdown of economic activities. Despite police assurances of safety, shops, markets, and offices remained closed.
The usually bustling streets and major roads were deserted, with only a few people seen at bus stops. The city appeared empty as residents chose to stay indoors rather than risk going out.
A notable exception was the sight of a few students cautiously heading to schools for their West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) exams as early as 7:30 am. This contrasted sharply with the otherwise deserted cityscape.
Security presence was high following recent clashes, including the killing and injury of suspected IPOB members in nearby Anambra State. The heavy security did little to encourage residents to resume normal activities.
