Oyo Government Files Murder, Manslaughter Charges Over Funfair Tragedy

The Oyo State Government has filed eight counts of murder, manslaughter, and criminal negligence against ex-queen Naomi Silekunola, radio proprietor Oriyomi Hamzat, and Principal Abdulahi Fasasi, over the December 18, 2024, funfair stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children in Ibadan. The charges, marked I/05C/2025, were filed on January 10, 2025, before the Oyo State High Court.

According to the state, the defendants failed to provide adequate security, crowd control measures, and medical facilities, leading to the tragic deaths. The offences contravene Sections 324, 308, and 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000. The victims included children as young as 1.5 years old, with 14 of the deceased named in the charge sheet.

Fasasi faces additional charges, including negligent acts causing harm and failure to provide adequate safety mechanisms. Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed to ensure justice is served, emphasizing accountability for the incident.

The defendants, arrested on December 24, remain in prison custody as the case proceeds in court. The tragedy has sparked widespread calls for stricter regulations on public events to prevent similar incidents.
