The Oyo State Government has taken proactive steps to prevent a cholera outbreak in public basic schools, instructing headteachers to ensure food handlers maintain strict hygiene practices. Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, delivered this directive on Saturday in Ibadan, emphasizing the state's commitment to student health and safety.

Adeniran called on parents, guardians, and school authorities to follow safety guidelines closely. The Board will collaborate with Education Secretaries, Headteachers, and other stakeholders to ensure these measures are strictly enforced. The advisory highlights the importance of hand hygiene, recommending that children use hand sanitizers and wash their hands with soap and water regularly, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

To further safeguard students, schools are advised to stock Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) in their clinics for prompt management of dehydration. Adeniran also stressed the importance of notifying the State emergency hotline, 615, immediately in case of any health emergencies or suspected cholera cases.

Regular preventive measures will include comprehensive health talks on cholera prevention for both learners and staff, as well as promoting safe drinking water practices. These efforts are part of the state's broader strategy to ensure a healthy learning environment for all students.
