The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has asserted that the party played a pivotal role in shaping the political trajectory of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Damagum highlighted the PDP’s enduring influence and resilience despite challenges, including Kwankwaso’s departure in 2015. "The PDP nurtured Kwankwaso’s political career and brought him to where he is today. We remain hopeful that he will return to work with us in rebuilding the party and challenging this oppressive government," Damagum said.

This statement follows Kwankwaso’s criticism of the PDP during his own interview with BBC Hausa Service, where he lamented the humiliation he faced within the party, which led to his defection.

Damagum dismissed the notion that the PDP had lost its relevance, citing the party’s ability to survive past crises, including Kwankwaso’s departure. "If the PDP didn’t die in 2015 when they thought they had weakened it, why would anyone think it is irrelevant now?" he questioned.

He emphasized the party’s continued electoral success and extensive nationwide presence, describing the PDP as the only party capable of winning elections outside of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"Even if four parties merge without the PDP, they cannot win an election," he stated, referencing the challenges faced by smaller parties in achieving electoral victories.

While acknowledging some of Kwankwaso’s grievances, Damagum expressed hope for reconciliation, noting efforts to resolve past disputes and rebuild trust.

"The PDP remains steadfast, maintaining its identity and producing leaders across the country. Kwankwaso is part of that legacy, and we believe there’s room for us to work together again," he concluded.
