Gunmen abducted the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Mr. Tony Aziegbemi, on Friday near his residence in the Government Reservation Area of Benin City, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The incident occurred less than a month after the party's primary election for the upcoming governorship election on September 21.
A source revealed that the abductors, driving two Toyota Corolla cars, intercepted Aziegbemi's jeep at a speed bump in the area. Aziegbemi was returning from a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki at the time of the abduction.
The driver, recounting the incident, stated, "When we left Government House around 11 p.m. and headed home, I noticed cars trailing us, so I decided to take a diversion. We had no idea they were kidnappers. A few minutes later, the same cars blocked our path at a speed bump, and gunmen emerged, ordering the chairman into their car before driving away."
