Approximately 60 members of the House of Representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are threatening to exit the party unless acting National Chairman Umar Ililya Damagum resigns immediately. They allege that Damagum has ceded the party's leadership structure to external parties.
The lawmakers further accuse Damagum of tampering with the caretaker committee lists in Rivers State and 10 other states by incorporating members from other parties, purportedly to undermine the main opposition.
Speaking on behalf of the 60 PDP lawmakers, Ugochinyere Ikenga, accompanied by five other lawmakers, addressed reporters at the National Assembly, stating that they are part of a coalition of opposition lawmakers within the PDP.
Ugochinyere, representing Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo State, alleges that Damagum, engaged in anti-party activities, has sold the party "for a plate of porridge." He insists that Damagum must resign immediately unless he intends to dismantle the party.
