Former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has vowed to resist any attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Senator Wabara made this vow in response to the reported mass resignation of some key PDP members in the South East geo-political zone. He accused the APC of using elements within the PDP to disintegrate the party.
The wave of resignations began with former Governor of Imo State, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, citing the lingering controversy over the position of the PDP National Secretary as his reason for leaving the party. This was followed by the alleged resignation of several key members and officials in Imo State.
Among those reported to have resigned were a BoT member, Chief Chris Okewulonu, four zonal officers, three state officers, a Local Government Chairman, former House of Representatives member Hon. Obinna Onwubuariri, and others.
Reacting to the development, Senator Wabara stated that the PDP BoT would intervene to prevent further exits. He emphasized that the BoT, as the conscience of the party, would not allow self-seeking individuals to be used by the ruling party to destabilize the PDP.
Senator Wabara expressed confidence in the PDP's ability to resolve its internal challenges and reiterated the party's commitment to remaining a strong opposition. He also dismissed speculations of an imminent implosion within the party, particularly in light of the perceived power struggle between Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
