The Supreme Court has finally put an end to the legal tussle over the Edo State governorship election, affirming the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Thursday, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, for lacking credible and sufficient evidence.
Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, who read the lead judgment, described the appeal as unmeritorious. He upheld the earlier decisions of both the election petition tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which had previously validated Okpebholo’s election.
This ruling officially confirms Okpebholo as the duly elected governor of Edo State following the September 21, 2024, polls—closing a chapter marked by intense political rivalry and courtroom battles.
The PDP’s defeat in court marks another significant setback for the party, which has struggled to overturn recent electoral losses across key states.
