The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed optimism about producing more state governors by 2027 and reclaiming power at the federal level. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) made this assertion during a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, on Sunday.
Speaking on behalf of the NWC, the National Treasurer, Alhaji Ahmed Yayare, emphasized the growing public discontent with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lingering economic hardship. He stated that the PDP remains the only viable opposition capable of rescuing Nigeria from its challenges.
“The cry of hunger and poverty is too much in the land. The 36 states of Nigeria are yearning for the return of PDP. Nigeria is in your hands. We need your support to salvage Nigeria,” Yayare said.
He added that PDP governors must unite to achieve the party’s vision of producing the president and vice president in 2027.
The PDP National Secretary, Ude Okoye, echoed Yayare’s sentiments, highlighting the NWC’s commitment to repositioning the party and restoring public confidence. He praised Governor Diri for his leadership and developmental achievements in Bayelsa.
In his response, Governor Douye Diri stressed the importance of unity and internal discipline within the PDP to maintain its viability as the leading opposition party.
“We cannot because of political considerations do the wrong thing. If PDP dies in our hands, posterity will not forgive us,” Diri stated.
Diri also called for internal cleansing and consensus-building to resolve conflicts within the party, discouraging the trend of resorting to court battles.
The meeting also served as an opportunity for the NWC to commiserate with Governor Diri over the recent losses of retired DIG Moses Jituboh and the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.
With plans to strengthen its foundation and form alliances, the PDP aims to position itself as a mega party that can challenge and replace the APC in 2027.
