The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has suggested merging the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) with the police to enhance effectiveness. Egbetokun made this recommendation at the National Dialogue on State Policing, organized by the House of Representatives in Abuja. He emphasized the need for a more streamlined approach, citing the NSCDC and FRSC as duplicating police functions.

Represented by the Assistant Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Mr. Ben Okoro, the I-G highlighted the challenges faced by the police, including inadequate training and manpower, as well as poor infrastructure such as dilapidated police barracks. He argued that Nigeria is not yet ready for state police and urged for a focus on merging existing agencies for better efficiency.

Egbetokun cautioned against the establishment of state police, suggesting it could be misused by state governors to suppress opposition and could lead to conflicts of interest and jurisdictional issues. He also expressed doubts about the ability of state police to effectively combat terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry due to resource constraints. He emphasized the need for improved training, modern policing techniques, and adequate funding to maintain internal security.

The Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, echoed the need for a comprehensive security framework to address the country's security challenges. Represented by Maj. Gen. Kunle Ariyibi, Musa stressed the importance of collaboration and shared commitment to develop policies and strategies for enhancing national security. He emphasized the need for a security framework that is inclusive, responsive, and capable of safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians.
