The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive for all police officers nationwide to wear black bands during the seven-day mourning period for the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. This gesture is part of the national tribute following his death after a battle with an undisclosed illness at the age of 56.

The presidency confirmed Lagbaja's passing on Wednesday, and the Federal Government responded by ordering the national flag to fly at half-mast in honor of his service. Lagbaja, appointed by President Bola Tinubu on June 19, 2023, was widely respected for his role in the fight against insurgency and violent crimes in the country.

In a statement on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi confirmed that the police force would wear black bands as a mark of respect. The statement praised Lagbaja for his gallantry, dedication, and leadership in tackling security challenges.

The Inspector General expressed deep respect for the late General, noting that he was a remarkable leader who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s security efforts. The mourning period serves as a tribute to his legacy and commitment to the nation.
