The Police Service Commission (PSC) has sanctioned disciplinary actions against several senior police officers, approving the dismissal of 19 personnel and the reduction in ranks of 19 others. The officers dismissed include 10 Assistant Superintendents, six Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent of Police.
Additionally, two Assistant Inspectors General of Police were reprimanded, one for refusing to carry out lawful instructions and the other issued a warning for negligence.
In a statement issued by the PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, it was revealed that the Commission reviewed 110 pending disciplinary cases and 23 appeals and petitions during its first plenary meeting in Abuja. The meeting was chaired by the Commission's Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), with other top officials in attendance.
The disciplinary actions also included severe reprimands, warnings, and letters of reprimand for other culpable officers. The Commission directed the prosecution of most dismissed officers by the Nigeria Police Force Legal Unit. Three pending disciplinary cases were stepped down for further information from the Inspector General of Police.
DIG Argungu emphasized the Commission's resolve to expedite disciplinary matters to ensure efficient career progression for officers cleared of wrongdoing and prompt punishment for those found guilty. He further warned police officers to steer clear of civil disputes, including land, marital, and rent-related issues, stressing that such matters should be left to the courts.
The statement noted that earlier decisions on several promotion matters had been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.
