Political Tension in Edo: Thugs Take Over Oredo Council Secretariat, Denies Obaseki Access to Office

Suspected political thugs armed with weapons disrupted activities at the Oredo Local Government secretariat in Edo State on Monday, preventing Chairman Tom Obaseki from accessing his office. The hoodlums, chanting war songs, occupied strategic positions, forcing Obaseki to retreat shortly after arriving at the council premises.

Speaking to journalists outside the secretariat, Obaseki expressed concern over the incident, describing it as a "disturbing trend." He called on security agencies to intervene, emphasizing the importance of a restraining order issued by the Edo State High Court.

Obaseki’s attempted resumption followed a Friday court ruling that nullified his suspension alongside 17 other council chairmen. The chairmen and their deputies had been suspended by the Edo State House of Assembly based on allegations of insubordination and gross misconduct filed by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The incident highlights escalating political tensions in Edo State, with calls mounting for swift action to restore order and ensure local governance functions without interference.
