Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost, has expressed deep concern over the recent surge of violent attacks in parts of Nigeria, describing the incidents as painful and alarming.
The Pope made this known on Sunday in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), where he offered prayers for victims of terrorism and communal violence following deadly attacks reported in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism. I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he wrote.
His statement comes amid growing security concerns across the country as attacks by gunmen and suspected bandits have left many communities mourning, with homes destroyed and residents displaced.
In Kwara State, reports indicated that gunmen attacked Woro village shortly after military operations were carried out in the area against what officials described as terrorist elements. During the assault, shops were reportedly set on fire and the home of a traditional ruler was also torched, throwing the community into panic.
Residents were said to have fled into nearby bushes to escape the violence as the attackers overran parts of the village.
In Katsina State, another deadly incident was recorded in Doma community, Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area, where over 20 people were reportedly killed. Locals said the attackers arrived in large numbers, opened fire on residents and fled afterwards.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, security operatives reportedly repelled an attack by suspected bandits in Anwase village, Kwande Local Government Area. Although authorities claimed no casualties were recorded, several houses were said to have been destroyed during the invasion.
Confirming the Benue incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said security forces responded quickly.
“It is true, there was an attack on Anwase, but our gallant officers repelled them and there was no casualty,” he said.
However, residents maintained that the attackers stormed the community around noon on Friday and set multiple homes on fire before escaping.
The Pope’s message has added an international voice to the growing calls for stronger security measures and urgent action to protect lives across Nigeria.
