The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has projected a reduction in egg prices, citing the state’s feed subsidy program as a key factor.
Government’s Intervention
The Lagos State Government, under the ₦500 million Ounje Eko Farmers Subsidy Programme (Ounje Eko FSP), is providing farmers with a 25% subsidy on animal feeds for poultry and fish. The initiative aims to boost local agricultural production and reduce food costs.
Feed Subsidy Distribution
- The distribution started on February 5 and will continue every Wednesday throughout February.
- The program provides discounted poultry feed to farmers, easing production costs.
Current Egg Prices & Expected Drop
- Egg prices have surged, with a crate selling between ₦5,000 and ₦6,000, depending on size.
- In early 2024, the price ranged between ₦2,800 and ₦3,000 per crate.
- With continued subsidy support, poultry farmers expect prices to drop, easing the burden on consumers.
PAN Chairman’s Remarks
The Chairman of PAN, Lagos State chapter, Mr. Mojeed Iyiola, praised the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems for the vital intervention.
“The distribution of feeds from the Lagos State Farmers’ Subsidy Programme, which commenced on February 5, is a fantastic idea. The future is looking bright for poultry farmers. We are happy and grateful for the intervention,” he stated.
Impact on Farmers & Consumers
If the feed subsidy is sustained beyond the initial four-week test run, it could:
✅ Reduce poultry production costs
✅ Stabilize or lower egg prices
✅ Boost local egg production
✅ Improve food security in Lagos State
Way Forward
- PAN is advocating for an extension of the subsidy program beyond February.
- Farmers urge the government to expand the subsidy’s reach to more poultry producers.
- Consumers hope for price relief, given the ongoing economic challenges.
The initiative is seen as a step toward stabilizing Nigeria’s poultry sector, ensuring affordability and sustainability in egg production and distribution.
